so progressive will give you this for free to try out then give you a quote based on your driving.
So how does Oppo feel about signing up (fake info - vin and social aren’t required) and seeing who gets the worst quote?

I’m just going to claim this now, we’ve got the autobahn.

My old boss had one of these and said it would flash and make a noise whenever he accelerated or braked too hard. It’s a scam.

No OBD II port. :(
![]() 05/11/2015 at 18:07 |

It makes noise?! Hah.
My work van must have a similar system because it’ll beep if you slam the brakes or go above 80. Once above 80 it’s a steady beeeeeeeeeeeep until you drop below 78. Even better is there’s no cruise control so youre playing the hover at 79 game

Someone out there has a spec Miata or some other ODBII track car that will crush this.
Or... for the icing on the cake, it would be awesome if one of those coast-to-coast record breakers put one in for their trip.
Progressive would put that shit on the wall.

It’s not a scam; it’s so when you do get in an accident, they can find something you did wrong and deny your claim.

If I hadn’t read any stories about how this has supposedly messed some cars up, I’d enter. . . And win.
![]() 05/11/2015 at 18:10 |

Yeah, it just plugs into your OBDII port, so I’d assume that all that it monitors is throttle position and speed. It might be able to glean acceleration and deceleration from your speed over time, but I doubt that it’s got a GPS or anything that would validate any of that data.

I should throw one of these on the Jeep for a week now that I’m not DD’ing it and get some cheap-ass insurance.

I tried these when we moved to rural Nevada, it constantly beeped and flashed, was annoying as hell. So I pulled them and sent them back. Too much big brother for me.

“Sorry, but that claim has a pre-existing condition. We’re not covering it.”

cheap ass insurance
Is that similar to when an athlete gets their legs insured?

>Actually, sign up for progressive and get this thing right before you go on a long vacation without the car.
>>Ask someone to drive the car on occasion, during the vacation.
>>>Get cheap ass insurance and return the device.

Nah, that’s cheap ass-insurance.

Damnit, we don’t have it in Indiana. I was gonna put it on my dad’s Miata and take it to autocross. :(

I gave one of these a shot last August when I was shopping around for cheaper insurance. I was doing really well not braking too hard or accelerating too wildly thanks to my slow ass Subaru haha
They ended up giving me a rate that was more than my current one because I drive too much. I guess it makes sense. Driving over 60+ miles a day makes my chances of having an accident higher than normal.

I wonder what mine would be considering I only drive like 12 miles a week. Granted those are some seriously spirited 12 miles since its the only time I drive the Stringbean and the rest of the week is occupied by driving an Uplander

I just got off the phone with Allstate (State Farm wanted to raise my rates by $700 a year for moving to a new state, Allstate lowered them by $200), and agreed to do their version of Snapshot.
Basically, it takes a reading of your driving habits for 2 months, and you send it back to them. It’s like a 35% discount, which is pretty substantial. Not a fan of Big Brother-type stuff generally, but for that much money, plus the fact that it’s a short-term thing that I don’t need to leave in permanently, I’m willing to go along with it.

Haha your rate would probably be pretty low. The thing keeps track of hard braking/accelerating, but if you get up to a good speed and carry that speed through corners and what not, they won’t know any better!
![]() 05/11/2015 at 19:53 |

Just two months? I wonder if I could do allstates (I have them now), behave with my driving for two months then get an awesome rate. but I am already only paying for recreational vehicle rates
![]() 05/11/2015 at 21:57 |

Yeah, that’s what she said on the phone. Apparently, it’s not wirelessly linked to them or anything, so you have to physically send it back to them so they can see what it recorded. Behaving for two months doesn’t seem that hard.
In your case though, it might not make as much of a difference with such infrequent use.

Business idea:
1. Find the manufacturer of these and buy up a bunch.
2. Sell to a low rate to track rats, street racers, back road bombers
3. Set up social site where data will be shared anonymously, automatically.
4. Have leader boards for highest g loads (acceleration, lateral, deceleration, sustained gs...)
5. Sell advertising to car mod vendors.
6. Profit!

I just remembered...
The other day, I did a quick brake repair on my neighbor’s teenage daughter’s car, and had to take it around the block to test the repair.
I should probably tell them about the hard braking and acceleration “events” before they get their bi-weekly report. :) They’re already on her ass about her triggering those thresholds.
I totally forgot that thing was in there when I did my WOT-ABS-WOT-ABS test sequence.

Hah! That’s awesome. Good on you for telling them cause that report could be detrimental for her. Damn that’s funny though.

neighbor’s teenage daughter is likely accelerating like crazy to get to the next red light ASAP so she can really focus on getting 160 words per minute into her texts (I’m assuming their is texting the whole time, but the WPM drops between the lights)

Mom tells me that her husband and daughter have “too many events” He drives a lot in rush-hour traffic, but she just drives to sports and school.. I expect him to have a few, since he merges on the highway, often tows a trailer, etc..
I’m dying to know what the threshold is for a “hard event” ODBII can only measure change in speed, ABS activation, throttle position, etc... I’m wondering what does it?
Merging onto the highway? Stopping for a yellow light?

Something about her weirds me out. That being said I still would. But I’d be very confused by it all and not sure of my decisions.

I just texted the mom and told her about it.
(My events, not the texting)
